Chhandam Nritya Bharati Mumbai and M-DO/KathakToronto are joining forces in presenting an interview and discussion with Toronto’s own esteemed Kathak dancer, Smt. Rina Singha.
Joanna de Souza will host this interview and guide the discussion with RinaJi.
Her history, as one of the early scholarship students at the seminal classical arts institution, Bharatiya Kala Kendra, studying under the great Pandit Shambhu Maharaj, and working with the Dagar Brothers as musical leaders at the institute, is unparalleled in today’s kathak community.
RinaJi is a dancer, creator, trailblazer, activist and mother, with so much to share of her unique experience.

This FUN session will give kathak students a basic understanding, and working knowledge of taal and compositional structure, and the importance of recitation (padhant).

Sitarist, Christopher Dicran Hale, will walk us through the elements of North Indian classical music, giving musical examples to augment discussion on Raag (musical scales) and composition.
Chris has a very interesting personal story that informs his musicianship.
